Causes of Tooth discoloration and Treatment options

TheĀ  color of teeth ranges from yellowish to grayish -white, dependind on enamel translucency.Ā  discolorationĀ  defined as any change in color or any departure from normal color. color of teeth becomes darker with age due to increased amount of dentin formation, loss of enamel and staing.Ā 

What Causes a tooth discoloration ?

It can be occurs due to surface accumulation of exogenous pigments like stains, restorative materials, tea, tobacco, iron, medication and chromogenic bacteria.
It can be also occurs due to some intrinsic factors like due to deposition of certain substances within enamel and dentin Examples, amelogenesis imperfecta, dentinogenesis imperfecta, dental fluorosis, porphyria, trauma, medications, ochronosis and hyperbilirubinemia.

Treatment can be done by two methods

  1. Scaling and polishing with paste containing fine powdered pumice.
  2. or it can be treated by applying bleaching solutions.
